In 1852, Nègre photographed the ruins of the ancient aqueduct used by the Romans to deliver water from Mons in the Var region to the port city of Fréjus in the south of France. Nègre draws comparisons between the aqueduct's path and the well-traveled road beside it. Nègre likely knew that this stretch of modern road was associated with ancient Rome as much as the ruins themselves.
