Whistler’s The Punt was printed in 1862 to illustrate the poem above by John Hamilton Reynold. The poem and the etching were published in a text titled Passages from Modern English Poets. A punt, a flat-bottomed boat, was used by nineteenth-century fishermen to travel up and down the shallow waters of the River Thames.
