William Wegman began as a pioneer in the West Coast conceptual movement in Los Angeles in the 1970s. Unlike their more austere predecessors on the East Coast, West Coast artists injected their work with humor, an often cinematic form of storytelling, and an emphasis on performance. For almost 40 years, Wegman has embodied these ideas collaborating with his Weimaraners to create a unique form of witty conceptualism. In these images, Wegman embraces a classical simplicity which merges performance with a modernist aesthetic and highlights the emotional weight and beauty of his iconic collaborators.

“I’ve always thought of working with the dogs as parallel play. The dogs play their game and I play mine.” - William Wegman
